Indonesia: Gov’t Focuses in Improving the Ease of Doing Business
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Government is focused in improving its ease of doing business indicator by reforming its tax and customs service sector. “The Finance Ministry has two, customs and taxation. Cross border transfer and the ease to pay tax,” says Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, on Wednesday, March 29, 2017.
Despite already conducting a number of improvements in the sector of tax and customs, policy or administrative wise, Sri Mulyani says that the institution will continue to improve its efforts. “We’ll attempt an even more radical way,” She said.
The improvements, according to Sri Mulyani, could be done by practicing what other foreign governments have implemented, such as online tax payment through an ATM machine commonly called e-payment. “The best example of taxation is South Korea. I will study it. We can follow their footsteps,” she added.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Darmin Nasution, admits that he’s reluctant to elaborate the details of the improvements to the media. “Other countries will know. It will be useless since everyone will act,” Darmin stated.
During the introductory of the limited meeting, President Jokowi said that Indonesia is included in the category of top reformers in the Ease Of Doing Business (EODB) report. Which was implemented in the customs and ease of doing business services.
Despite this, President Jokowi wants a quicker form of reform that could break Indonesia into the EODB’s top 40 list. “Indonesia is currently categorized as a top reformer in the 2017 EODB report. But we must show that Indonesia is able to reform even quicker in the ease of doing business and investing,” Says the President.
According to Jokowi, Indonesia’s 2016 EODB ranking arose 15 spots from the previous 106 to the 91st. This is why the President urged every Ministers and agency leaders to focus in accelerating the nation’s EODB improvement ranking.
