Cambodia’s milled rice export up 16% in H1

Cambodia exported 327,000 tonnes of milled rice in the first semester this year, an increase of 16 percent compared to the same period last year, earning the country $279 million, according to a report by the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF).

China remained the Kingdom’s biggest export market for the milled rice export during the period, the report said. China accounted for 51.43 percent of the total milled rice export from the country during the period with 168,280 tonnes, showing a 17.44 percent increase.

The export to 23 European Union (EU) countries rose by 46.9 percent to 106,194 tonnes and this accounted for 32 percent of the total volume, said the report.

The share of the fragrant rice export stood at 64.44 percent, white rice (non-fragrant type of rice) at 34.12 percent, while par-boiled rice and organic rice accounted for 1.93 percent and 1.50 percent respectively for the period.

CRF’s Secretary-General Lun Yeng said yesterday that the white rice export to the EU has gone up since early this year. “The EU had removed some of the controls on Cambodia’s white rice in January and this has pushed the export to the market,” Yeng said.

He also attributed the growth in the rice export to affordable transportation. The cost had gone up last year due to the shortage of containers following the Covid-19 preventive measures.

About the China market, Yeng said the two governments have agreed to push the export of milled rice and other agricultural products from Cambodia. Under a deal signed last year, there is a 400,000-tonne quota for the milled rice export to China from Cambodia now.

In the first six months of this year, Cambodia also exported 1.73 million tonnes of paddy rice worth $401.9 million. Almost 100 percent of the paddy rice export went to Vietnam.
