Cambodia: DGT to send property tax bills to taxpayers’ homes

The General Department of Taxation is preparing procedures for issuing annual property tax invoices for taxpayers, like water and electricity bills and sending them to taxpayers at individual homes, in order to increase the efficiency of property tax collection.

The remark was made by Kong Vibol, GDT director-general during a ceremony on tax official appointment at Phnom Penh administration hall on April 26.

This is to make people not forget the obligation to pay taxes to the state, Vibol said.

“We are advising the units under the tax to issue the property bills and send to their individual homes, like water and electricity bills, to remind taxpayers not to forget to pay taxes,” Vibol said.

He also requested cooperation with local authorities in case property taxpayer’s houses could not be found through communes and districts to help find the taxpayer’s residences.

The move is also an advantage of sub-national development to develop infrastructure and provide good services, he said.

The property tax is a yearly tax payment that the taxpayers pay from January to September each year.

The General Department of Taxation is currently establishing a system to label tax payment-paid properties, aimed to strengthen tax payment transparency in the real estate sector.

The code management system is designed to mark properties or individual houses that already pay property tax, Vibol said in March.

He said that any properties developed by investors and any individual houses will be marked as paid property tax payments, which is easy for them once those properties or individual houses are transferred to new owners.

Property transfer tax income increased by 35 percent to 226 billion riels (approximately US$55.7 million) in the first three months of the year, GDT stated in a monthly meeting held on April 19.

During the first quarter, DGT collected more than 5,115 billion riels, equivalent to more than $1,263 million, 22 percent increase compared to the same period in 2021.
