ADB developing project to improve Cambodian industry: Labour Minister

ADB has been researching and developing a new project called “Skills for Future Economy” with the main purpose of improving the industry in Cambodia.

Ith Samheng, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, met with Jyotsana Varma, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) yesterday. The two discussed Industrial Development Policy, Employment and Employment Development Policy, National Policy on Technical and Vocational Education and Training, among other policies.

The Minister said that since Cambodia has achieved complete peace, the ADB has made significant contributions to the socio-economic development of Cambodia.

Varma said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, both ADB and the Royal Government of Cambodia have worked together to achieve success in training young people with knowledge and skills to build their bright futures.

Minister Samheng mentioned the challenges faced by Cambodia, such as the lack of skilled Cambodian workers to meet the demands of the labour market, the lack of value for TVET by the youth and the community. Most of the people who take up TVET are school dropouts or workers who take up further training.

Samheng requested more technical assistance from ADB in the field of labour and further cooperation in the field of TVET.
