Thailand: Foreign film productions brought in B900m in Q1
Thailand earned over 900 million baht of revenue from international film productions in the first quarter of 2017, thanks to new incentives offered to movie producers, according to the Department of Tourism.
The department projected that the country would reach the target of receiving 3-4 billion baht from foreign film production in this year, according to director-general Wanasiri Morakul.
The statistics showed that 239 foreign films have already been shot in Thailand from January to March this year. Hollywood is the country’s top customer, generating 161 million baht, followed by Great Britain with 160 million.
The new incentive, effective since January, offers a 15% cash rebate for the film producers with local spending over 100 million baht.
Close, a film by an English producer, got the 15% rebate with 100 million baht in local spending.
Two movie productions with a combined investment of over 620 million baht are likely to be approved for the rebate in May, said Ms Wanasiri, adding that the cash rebate may amount to 93 million baht.
She said the department had also launched marketing and promotional campaigns to attract more foreign film productions to use Thailand as the location of their movie productions.
