Philippines: Vehicle sales up 4.7% in July

MANILA, Philippines — Local car and truck assemblers registered higher sales last month but expect a slowdown this month amid the stricter quarantine measures imposed due to the threat of the COVID Delta variant.

Data released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) yesterday showed total vehicle sales rose by 4.7 percent to 21,498 units in July from 20,542 units in the same month last year.

Passenger car (PC) sales climbed 15.3 percent to 7,102 units while the commercial vehicle (CV) segment went up slightly to 14,396 units.

Compared to sales of 22,550 units in June, however, the July numbers were down by 4.7 percent as PC and CV sales registered month-on-month declines.

CAMPI president Rommel Gutierrez said “the industry welcomed the year-on-year growth of 4.7 percent but anticipates a decline in sales this month with the reimposition of ECQ (enhanced community quarantine) in NCR (National Capital Region), among other high-risk areas.”

Metro Manila is under ECQ from Aug.6 to 20.

From January to July, total CAMPI and TMA sales accelerated 46 percent to 154,265 units from 105,583 units in the same period last year.

As of end-July, PCs sold by the group grew 64.6 percent to 49,508 units while CV sales increased 38.7 percent to 104,757 units.
