Malaysian households’ access to Internet rose to 90.1% end-2019
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian households’ access to the Internet rose by 3.1 percentage points to 90.1% in 2019 as compared to 87% in 2018, the Statistics Department said on Friday.
It said the percentage of households’ access to mobile phone remained at 98.2% in 2019, based on the report on ICT use and access by individuals and households 2019.
“On the other hand, the percentage of households’ access to computer decreased to 71.3% in 2019 compared to 71.7% in 2018, ” it said.
The report contains statistics on the use and access of ICT by individuals and households which are important in planning, formulating and evaluating national ICT Development policies and strategies.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the percentage of Internet usage in Malaysia increased to 84.2% in 2019 from 81.2% in 2018.
He said the five most popular activities among the Internet users were anticipating social network (97.1%), downloading pictures, movies, videos or music; playing or downloading games (84.7%), finding information on goods or services (83.5%), telephoning over the Internet/ VoIP (77.4%) and downloading software or applications (77.1%).
Analysis of Internet users by age group showed that individuals in the age group 20 to 24 were more likely to use the Internet to find a job or submit a job application (49.5%) and watching television online (56.3%).
Individuals aged 25 to 29 preferred the activity of Internet banking (61.5%) and ordering goods and services through e-commerce (45.1%).
Individuals aged between 35 and 39 were more active on using the Internet to use services related to travel or travel-related accommodation (32.6%).
As for individuals aged 45 to 49, they favoured posting opinions or voting on civic or political issues on the Internet (21.1%).
“The percentage of individuals using computer also increased to 72.1% in 2019 as compared to 70.5% in 2018. Meanwhile, percentage of individuals using mobile phone remained at 97.9% in 2019, ” he said.
