Indonesia: QR code payment standardization to be completed this year
Bank Indonesia is now working to reach its target for quick response (QR) code payment standardization, which is expected to be completed this year, a BI official has said.
BI electronification and national payment gateway deputy director Aloysius Donanto said on Monday that the central bank was working with payment providers to conduct the test for the new system.
“Currently, BI and industry players are still doing a production trial run for a standardized QR code payment,” he said during a press conference on the National Payment Gateway (GPN) in Jakarta.
He added that the QR code payment would be applied in the GPN network infrastructure, supported by four local switching companies, ATM Bersama, Prima, ALTO and Link.
BI electronification and national payment gateway executive director Pungky Purnomo Wibowo said the standardization was needed to ensure that the infrastructure would not be dominated by certain providers.
While in China QR code payment is dominated by two major players, AliPay and WeChat Pay, other countries have started to standardize their QR code system. India launched its Bharat QR in February 2017, while Singapore’s standardized QR code payment is expected to be launched this year. (bbn)
