Indonesia: Govt Considers Three Provinces for Next State Capital: Jokowi

TEMPO.COBalikpapan – President Jokowi says that he is currently waiting for results of the assessment of three provinces which will replace Jakarta as the capital of Indonesia.

The study conducted by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) will see several aspects such as disaster vulnerability, economic factor, social and political factors, and the infrastructure.

Jokowi admits that he cannot reveal the locations to avoid land speculation that could potentially complicate matters even further.

“People would purchase available lands if we mention [the location],” said President Joko Widodo.

Considering that moving a capital city to another location can be extremely expensive, Jokowi urges authorities and officials to keep the potential locations confidential.

“We’ll talk about it as soon as the final report on the study is out. In the meantime, we can’t reveal anything,” Jokowi said.

East Kalimantan Governor Awang Faroek suggests several locations that could potentially replaceJakarta as the state capital, namely Balikpapan, Bontang, and Kutai.
