Indonesia-Cambodia Direct Flight Targeted to be Opened in 2019
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The direct flight from Indonesia to Cambodia is targetted to be realized in January or March 2019. The discussion on the route is entering the technical issue.
“An airline has sounded out to join but I can yet mention the name,” said Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia, Sudirman Haseng, when met in Jakarta, October 25.
According to Sudirman, besides the businesses, people from both countries have been demanding the Indonesia-Cambodia route.
Currently, the passengers heading to Cambodia from Indonesia must transit in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore which will make the trip reaches 9 hours long. Therefore, the direct flight is expected to cut the flight time to only 3 hours.
Sudirman revealed, that Cambodia was the most enthusiast about the Cambodia-Indonesia route but he said that he wanted Indonesia to take the initiative to start the route.
With the realization of Indonesia-Cambodia route, Sudirman targeted a 50 percent increase of tourist visit from Cambodia to Indonesia. Last year, 6,000 Cambodian tourists visited Indonesia, which means an increase of 23 percent from the tourist visit in 2016.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Phen, Cambodia, recorded around 55,000 Indonesian citizens visited Cambodia in 2017.
The Indonesia-Cambodia direct flight will also benefit the shipping industry in addition to the tourism sector.
