Cambodia: Nearly 84,000 tonnes of salt production produced in Kampot this year

Kampot province has produced nearly 84,000 tonnes of salt this year to supply the domestic market, according to a report from the salt farms bureau of the Kampot provincial department of industry, science, technology and innovation.

Koeng Sonthean, chief of salt farms bureau of the Kampot provincial department of industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, told Khmer Times that the volume of salt production in Kampot province this year was 83,969 tonnes.

He said that there are about 179 salt group producers (1,650 farmers) with 3,726 hectares of salt farms in the province. Sonthean added that the salt producers started producing the salt from January to the end of July this year.

“This year’s salt production was good and of high quality since the weather is hot, which was favourable for  salt producers and salt production,” Sonthean added.

“Among 83,969 tonnes, 44,822 tonnes was sold and distributed across the country, and the remaining 39,000 tonnes was kept in  stock to supply in the future demand,” he said.

Sonthean added that a sack of salt (around 50 kilograms) now sells for $2 to $2.5.

He said that the salt production this year is enough to supply the country’s demand. If salt production in Kep province is included, the total salt production in the country will reach 100,000 tonnes.
