Thailand: Roadmap to digital society in the work
The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society is drawing up a road map towards creating a “paperless and cashless society” in line with government policy.
The project for government agencies will be implemented next year and the ministry will submit a proposal on the merger of CAT Telecom and TOT to the State Enterprise Policy Office or ‘super board’ on November 30 this year, before it goes to the Cabinet for a final approval.
Digital Economy and Society Minister Pichet Durongkaveroj said the goal is to facilitate government services to the public under a seamless system , without the need for official documents.
The road map will cover various areas, including amendment to law on government documents, communication integration and network connection between government agencies.
The government will provide one-stop services in rural areas nationwide.
The ministry will announce the launch of digital identification or digital ID in the near future, after submitting the project for approval by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) next month.
The country currently has two cashless projects, PromptPay and QRCode payment.
“A paperless and cashless society will create easy access for government agencies. It will also raise public confidence in spending and financial transactions via the online channel. It is part of the government’s Thailand 4.0 initiative,” said Pichet.
In regard to telecommunication agencies, the ministry will establish National Telecom as a framework for the merger of CAT Telecom and TOT.
Pichet said collaboration of the two state enterprises in the areas of mobile spectra and broadband Internet networks, through law amendments, will ease the workload and enhance competitiveness of the new agency.
The new state company, scheduled to begin operations early next year, would be wholly-owned by the Finance Ministry.
The ministry will hold an event titled “Digital Thailand Big Bang 2018” under the concept of Thailand Big Data from September 19 to 23 at Impact Muang Thong Thani in Bangkok.
In collaboration with more than 100 local and foreign government agencies, Thai and international private-sector partners from 12 countries China, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Poland, Indonesia, Singapore, USA, Vietnam, Nepal, India and Israel, the event is expected to draw 250,000 visitors.
The 60,000-square-metre venue will feature over 400 exhibition booths.
“Digital Thailand Big Bang 2018” aims to emphasise the government policy to transform the country with digital technology and enhance public knowledge of the new era, he said.
