Philippines: Online hiring seen to remain robust

MANILA, Philippines — Online hiring sentiment in the Philippines is expected to remain positive this year amid expectations of strong economic growth, according to employment website Monster.

In a statement, Monster said the positive hiring activity in the country seen last year is likely to be sustained this year.

Based on its monthly Monster Employment Index (MEI), which tracks online job posting activities in the country and records the industries and occupations showing the highest and lowest growth in recruitment activity, the Philippines had an average six percent year-on-year growth in online hiring last year.

“The Philippines has solidly positioned itself as a shining spot for economic expansion this year, with a strong gross domestic product growth projection and an overall growth momentum that fell well within targets. This will have an impact on hiring within the country’s key industries which include retail, banking and finance, IT (information technology) and BPO (business process outsourcing), and more,” Sanjay Modi, managing director for Monster.com in Asia Pacific and the Middle East said.

He said expansion in export activities, as well as the increase in domestic demand and growth in public sector investment are seen to have an impact on online hiring activity this year.

“Such optimism has definitely provided some peace of mind for employers considering a rise in headcount this year,” he said.

In terms of occupation groups, he said demand for finance and accounts professionals is expected to continue to rise this year.

“The demand for finance and accounts professionals was most notable in 2017 and is expected to continue growing in 2018, backed by strong economic growth, low interest rates, improved asset quality and strong profitability,” Modi said.

He added the retail sector which also posted positive growth in online hiring last year, is another one to look out for this year, given plans to add up to 630,000 square meters of shopping mall space in the next three years, despite the rising e-commerce business.

As the country’s IT and BPO sector, as well as the banking sector ended last year with positive hiring activity, Monster anticipates both sectors to sustain such performance this year.

Meanwhile, a bumpy road is seen for human resources and administrative roles this year as hiring activity for the sector has been weak last year.

According to the MEI, the occupational group reported a one percent year-on-year decline on average for overall hiring activity in 2017.

Monster, for more than 20 years, has served as an online career and recruitment resource, providing relevant profiles to employers and relevant jobs to jobseekers across industry verticals, experience levels and geographies.

At present, it has more than 200 million people registered on the Monster Worldwide network and has operations in more than 40 countries.
