Myanmar to export anti-venom to Laos, Cambodia

YANGON, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) — Myanmar is planning to export anti-snake venom to Laos and Cambodia in early 2018, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Monday.

U Ko Ko Aung, General Manager of the state-owned Myanmar Pharmaceutical Factory (MPF), said that 50,000 vials of anti-venom out of 100,000 vials for snake bite produced annually by the MPF are slated for export.

He disclosed that the MPF produced only 16,000 vials of anti-venom in 2012 but it increased to 100,000 vials in 2016.

Anti-venom is manufactured by harvesting the immunoglobins from horse blood but Myanmar had lack of horse population for producing anti-venom serum and substandard technology, he said, adding that at present, anti-venom producing plant has been established with technical assistance from Australia and Brazil which reduces the mortality of horse.

According to reports, about 10,000 snakebite incidences occurred every year across Myanmar, especially in rural areas.
