Myanmar: Ministry to set up industrial zone in Paletwa

The Ministry of Industry has decided to set up an industrial zone in Paletwa township, Chin State, according to Union Industry Minister U Khin Maung Cho on May 25.

That industrial zone is aimed for the development of value-added small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Those SMEs include Chin traditional loom business, coffee industry and ginger and elephant foot yam (a tropical tuber crop) in Chin State, he explained at the session of Amyotha Hluttaw.

It is hoped that the new industrial zone can boost the productivity, competitiveness and innovation of those enterprises.

“We realised that it is necessary to take a number of steps to support the development of the SMEs. For example, we need to upgrade the packaging to a standard acceptable and competitive internationally.

“In order to generate talents, innovation and new designs, we have a plan to establish the Paletwa industrial zone,” the industry minister said.

A vocational training school will be set up in the industrial zone to provide human resources training for the SMEs, he said.

“With the knowledge gained from this training, we can raise the traditional products to an international standard. Thus, family businesses can be developed into international exporters, with the support from the Ministry of Industry,” the minister added.

After the zone is up and running, the ministry will also arrange loans for SMEs to apply. The loans will be used for marketing purposes.
