Myanmar: Mandalay chamber seeks to ease election restrictions
THE Mandalay business chamber has pushed for an amendment to make it easier for ordinary members to join its central executive committee in an election which will take place in two months time.
Eighty members of the Mandalay Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MRCCI) have submitted their joint request to the authority and related bodies to ask for an amendment on the constitution on October 20, U Win Htay, MRCCI vice chair, told The Myanmar Times on October 27.
According to 22(d) in chapter four of the constitution, 40 percent of incumbent executive members sitting on the board and members appointed by the subsidiary organisations of the chamber will retain their membership on the committee automatically. This results in fewer opportunities for newcomers to join the decision-making body, U Win Htay explained.
“Election will be held in December, that is why we have pushed ahead the amendment on the regulation,” he said.
The chamber attempted to amend this regulation since August but has not succeeded so far. U Win Htay added that the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) does not have the regulations or restrictions currently implemented by the MRCCI.
