Myanmar: Govt allows foreign JVs to trade agri machinery
In a bid to industrialise and further develop Myanmar’s agriculture sector, the Ministry of Commerce will permit foreign joint ventures operating in the country to import and sell agri-related machinery.
The move will also help to modernise the local agri-products manufacturing sector by raising productivity and longer term cost-efficiency.
The companies are permitted to sell machinery at retail or wholesale prices.
“I think it is good because demand for machinery in the agriculture sector is huge. It is also good news for the farmers as they will have more options,” U Soe Tun, vice president of Myanmar Rice Federation, said.
He added that the move will not only encourage competition in the local market, making capital machinery such as tractors, harvesters and seed planting equipment, which is what many farmers need.
It will also draw new companies and foreign direct investment in the domestic agriculture sector.
