Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Media Summit Opened In Vientiane

(KPL) The 2018 Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Media Summit was opened on Jul 2 under the theme “Cooperation in the Mekong-Lancang Community for a bright future”.

Jointly hosted by the China People’s Daily of the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Information and Culture of the Lao PDR, the media summit drew heads or senior executives of mainstream media organizations from the six Mekong-Lancang countries namely Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.  

Among senior officials attending the summit were Huang Kunming, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Publicity Department; Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee Secretariat member, and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Propaganda and Training Board; Tuo Zhen, Editor in Chief of China People’s Daily Management Board; and Li Jinzao, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism of China.  

“This event is viewed as a significant milestone in cooperation within the media sector in the six Mekong-Lancang countries, which have the common purpose and objective to promote peace and stability in the region, narrow the development gap and enhance cooperation among Mekong-Lancang riparian countries. The success of this mission will be possible due to the creation of mutual understanding, solidarity and enhanced dialogue and cooperation that is based on equality and mutual benefit,” said Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Bosengkham Vongdara.

“As we are aware, since the establishment of the Asean-China dialogue partnership in 1991, the two dialogue partners have strengthened political trust and cooperation in economic and socio-cultural areas and exchanged lesson in different sectors. As a result, Asean-China and China-Asean cooperation has advanced and developed gradually, particularly in regional media cooperation. This has led to the upgrade and enhancement of the media’s role in cooperating, sharing and disseminating information,” said Mr Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune.

As part of preparations for the summit, representatives of media organisations from the six Mekong-Lancang countries attended a media training session and took field trips to several tourist sites in Laos to collect data and produce a variety of tourism documentaries.

The media content produced will be disseminated in the participating countries as part of efforts to promote Lao tourism in 2018 as this year, the government of the Lao PDR launched Visit Laos Year 2018 with an aim to encourage tourists from all corners of the world to visit and experience cultural, historical and natural tourist sites in Laos.

The summit also provided another sub technical discussion forum for participants to share their knowledge on new media, and the advertising of tourism through Mekong-Langcang media cooperation.
