Malaysia: June industrial output expands at slightly faster of 3.9%
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s industrial production index (IPI) in June expanded by 3.9% on-year, slightly higher than a Bloomberg survey of a 3.8% growth.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said on Friday the growth in June 2019 was driven by the increase in all indices with mining expanding by 4.6%, manufacturing (3.8%) and electricity (1.7%).
The Department of Statistics also reported the manufacturing sector output rose by 3.8% in June 2019 as compared to June 2018 after recording a growth of 4.2% in May 2019.
The major sub-sectors contributing to the increase in June 2019 were non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products (4.8%), electrical and electronics products (3.5%) and petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (3%).
As for the electricity sector, output increased by 1.7% in June 2019 from a year ago.
The output of mining sector recorded significant growth in three consecutive months since April 2019.
Its output expanded by 4.6% in June 2019 on-year. Undeprinning the growth was the natural gas index (13%) but while the crude oil index fell by 3.7%.
The Statistics Department said the IPI of Malaysia for the second quarter 2019 recorded a growth of 3.9% from a year ago.
Driving the growth were mining (3.3%), manufacturing (4.1%) and electricity (4.4%).
