Malaysia: Govt may set ceiling price for air tickets if interim steps fail

THE government may consider suggestions to set a ceiling price for domestic air tickets during festive seasons if the current interim measures are not successful, says Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar.

The Deputy Transport Minister said at the moment the government would not impose ceiling and floor prices for airline tickets.

“We want to avoid any manipulation by airline companies as the average ticket prices may go up even during off-peak season.

“The government will also continue to allow air fares to be market driven.

“With this, airline companies can set their rates by taking into account market demands, economy and other factors such as fuel and operation costs,” Kamarudin said in reply to Hasanuddin Mohd Yunus (Pakatan-Hulu Langat).

Kamarudin said airline companies had given their commitment to increase flight frequency by more than 20%, seven days before main festivals such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Hari Gawai and Kaamatan due to high demand.
