Laos commercial agricultural production increases

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) – Agricultural production in Laos is mainly of three types – native agriculture, mixed crop plantation and commercial production, the Department of Planning and Finance under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry stated at a seminar to mark World Food Day and International Day and National Week for Poverty Eradication in Vientiane on Tuesday.

Native agricultural production is slowly diminishing but it is still important, and agricultural production in an accumulated way is expanding in the country while commercial production is increasing every year.

The government is encouraging Lao farmers to take up commercial agricultural production to ensure food security and exports through close cooperation with development partners and international organisations.

Laos has been able to produce sufficient rice for domestic consumption since 2000 but some people in remote areas still face a shortage of rice.
