Laos-China Railway Confirmed to Be Completed by End of 2021
(KPL) Mr Chen Jiandong, an inspector of International Cooperation Department, China Railway, confirmed last week that the construction of the Laos-China railway will be completed by the end of 2021.
Conducting construction activities in northern Laos is more challenging for contractors because there are many mountains and many tunnels need to be drilled in mountainous areas, according to Mr Jiandong.
“We still have four years to complete the railway construction in Laos. There may be some other challenges in the future, but we will solve such challenges during the process of engineering and another problem is that even though all activities of the construction are being conducted, land acquisitions in some areas are yet to be finished. We thus still need great cooperation from local governments in Laos,” he said.
The China-Laos railway has a total length of 414.332 kilometers with over 62.7 percent to be formed by bridges and tunnels. The railway will stretch from Laos-China border in Mohan of China and Boten of Laos to Vientiane Capital.
Operating speed on the route is designed to be 160 km per hour, a middle high speed railway standard. The investment is some 40 billion Chinese yuan (US$5.8 billion) with 70 percent of which provided by Chinese government and the rest 30 percent from the Lao side.
China-Laos railway is the first China’s overseas route connecting with the railway system in China, using Chinese technology, equipment and investment.
