Indonesia: Transportation Ministry to Soon Ratify Online Taxi Regulation

TEMPO.COJakarta – Director General of Land Transportation Budi Setyadi said the Ministry of Transportation will finalize the online taxi regulation this month and will be ratified on November 20.

The regulation will replace the Ministerial Regulation No. 108 of 2017 regarding online transportation. It also regulates the rates and other aspects, such as safety, security, and comfort.

In addition, to resolve the friction between operators and partners, the Ministry of Transportation also provides lower tariff standards for online taxis. The operators are not allowed to set the rates below Rp3,500-Rp6,500.

If the operators such as Grab and Go-Jek do not comply with the regulation, several sanctions will be given in the form of a warning letter and even closing the application.

The public testing, said Budi, is being carried out in several provinces, such as Makassar, Surabaya, and Medan. “In this public test, there are also the representatives of the alliance, so they can deliver it to their community,” he said.

Previously, the Supreme Court (MA) canceled a number of articles contained in Minister of Transportation (PM) Regulation No. 108 of 2017 concerning the Implementation of People’s  Transportation with Non-Route Public Vehicles.

One of the points that were canceled was the regulation regarding stickers, instead, the Ministry of Transportation would apply a special code to online taxis. It aims to make it easier for the police to know which taxi vehicles are online and not.
