Indonesia: Food and Beverages Industry Grows 6.46 Percent
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto said that food and beverages industry grew 8.46 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016, or above non-oil and gas processing industry at 4.42 percent.
The export value of food and beverages products, including palm oil, in 2016 reached USD26.39 billion. Meanwhile, investment realization in food and beverages industry as of the third quarter of 2016 had reached IDR24 trillion in domestic investments and USD1.6 billion in foreign direct investments.
In a press release on Thursday Minister Airlangga said that among the most prospective products of beverages industry is coconut drink. “At present, coconut drink is popular among consumers. We have a great potential because we have the raw material. So far, we can only export the fruits,” he said.
According to Airlangga, Indonesia’s beverage industry have been dominated by bottled water at 84 percent, followed by soft drinks with only 3.6 percent and others, such as sports drinks and fruit drinks, with 12.4 percent.
Airlangga said that the average growth of soft drink industry in 2016 was 6-7 percent. He is confident that the figure will continue to increase. “New investments in the developing market will not only be made in terms of types of products but also the market segmentation,” Airlangga said.
