Indonesia – DPR: More Illegal Foreign Workers than the Registered Ones
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – House of Representatives (DPR) Head of Commission IX Dede Yusuf predicts that the number of illegal foreign workers in Indonesia far exceeds those that are registered.
“The unregistered ones, illegals that enter the country with a tourist or business visa might be three times bigger than [registered foreign workers],” said Dede at Menteng, Central Jakarta yesterday.
Dede said that the officially registered foreign workers are currently around 73,000 people. 24,000 of them are said to be coming from China. Furthermore, according to Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri, the foreign workers by the end of 2017 amounted to 85,000 people.
Based on Presidential Decree No 20/2018, Dede reminded the government to focus its efforts on monitoring the foreign workers’ considering that there are only 1,900 labor inspectors currently.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had ratified the Presidential Decree on March 26 which is a continuation of several laws that have existed previously, going as far to Presidential Decree No 72/2014 that was signed by former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) on the employment of foreign workers and their work period extension.
