Cambodian silk production attracts Japanese investment
The Japan-based iL BRiLLE expressed its desire to invest in Khmer silk production through the “Cambodian Golden Silk (CGS)” project working group.
This statement was made during the visit of the Director of the Japanese company iL BRiLLE, Fumiaki Takahashi, and his colleagues with the Minister of Agriculture. Forestry and Fisheries, Veng Sakhon, on the afternoon of January 25. The meeting was held to inform the Minister of the project to establish the “Cambodian Golden Silk (CGS)” team in the future. This is according to the Facebook post of Minister Sakhon.
Fumiaki informed the Minister that Cambodia has potential in silk production, which have traditionally been practiced for centuries. Although, in recent years the country’s silk production has declined. The Director stated that the investment in silk production is to produce silk for the textile sector and especially, to process this silk product into protein for the cosmetic sector, which is popular in Japan and the current regional market.
The CGS project will benefit to rural weavers and provide them with a source of employment and will add value to the country’s sill production sector through the use of silk for cosmetics. The project will also establish a centre for incubation of the larvae and will request UNESCO to register Khmer silk as a cultural heritage.
The Minister welcomed and supported the company’s investment in Khmer silk production.
