Cambodia: Siem Reap new airport construction 90% completed

Around 90 percent of the construction of Angkor Siem Reap International Airport has been completed and is set for an official inauguration in October.

An update regarding the construction of the airport was provided after an inspection by the steering committee yesterday. Tekreth Samrach, secretary of state at the Council of Ministers, led the team.

“As of the end of March, the Siem Reap Angkor International Airport project has achieved 90 percent as planned and is ready for a flight trial in May before its official launch on October 16, 2023,” the committee said.

Yunnan Investment Group, parent company of Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport Co Ltd, invests in the new airport.

In a courtesy call to Prime Minister Hun Sen earlier in March, its CEO and vice chairman of the board of directors Liu Minglin confirmed that the flight trials would be conducted in May and an official inauguration in October.

The Prime Minister applauded the airport’s construction progress and said the Siem Reap Angkor International Airport plays an important role in connecting airways not only domestically but also between other countries.

It will contribute to the promotion of the tourism sector in Siem Reap province, as well as attract investors and business people to Cambodia, he said.

The Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport project is located in Tayek commune, Sot Nikum district, about 51km from Siem Reap city and 40km from Angkor Wat temple.

The construction of the airport began in March 2020 by AIAI. The $880-million worth airport is 4E class which enables it to handle long-haul aircraft.

There are three international airports in Cambodia, including Phnom Penh, Siem Reap province, and Preah Sihanouk province. Other three airports are under construction -Techo International Airport in Kandal province, Angkor Siem Reap International Airport in Siem Reap province, and Dara Sakor International Airport in Koh Kong province.

Tourism is one of the four pillars supporting Cambodia’s economy. The country attracted up to 6.61 million international tourists in 2019, generating gross revenue of $4.92 billion, according to the Ministry of Tourism.
