Cambodia: CCC plans offices overseas

The Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC) plans to open several offices overseas, aiming to establish the first one by next year.

The new offices are envisioned as centres to promote foreign investment in the kingdom. Their role will also be to help Cambodian companies export their products abroad, according to Tan Monivann, CCC’s vice president.

The list of candidate countries has now been narrowed down to just a few, but a decision has yet to be made as to where the first CCC centre overseas will be located.

“It will likely be inside the European Union,” said Mr Monivann. “Germany and France have been the first countries to express an interest.

“It is taking a long time to consider all the candidate locations and to decide where the first office will be built. We have not chosen a location yet, but we will very soon.”

Mr Monivann explained the new centres will be particularly helpful for exporters with limited experience and contacts overseas.

“If they face issues with the barcode system or with customs, the CCC offices will help them,” he said, adding that the first centre will launch in 2019.

Long Keo Vichet, spokesman at Ministry of Commerce, said CCC offices abroad will complement the work being done by trade centres in China.

“While the trade centres aim to promote Cambodian products abroad, CCC centres’ role will be to connect businesses and attract investment,” he said.

Cambodia has recently opened several trade centres across China, including Xi’an in Guangzhou province and Hangzhou in Zhejiang.

Te Taing Por, president of the Federation of Associations for Small and Medium Enterprises of Cambodia, applauded CCC’s decision to build the offices.

“Having representative offices abroad will help local producers. The sooner we get them the better because they will help our SMEs send their products abroad.”
