Cambodia and Thailand look to legalise migrants
The Cambodian labour minister met the Thai ambassador on Tuesday to discuss legalising undocumented Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand, as the deadline approaches for migrants in the neighbouring kingdom to be registered.
Labour Minister Ith Sam Heng said after meeting with Thai Ambassador Nuttavudh Photisaro that the two are collaborating to ensure all Cambodians working in Thailand are registered and legalised by June. “In the middle of 2017, Thai government figures showed that over 400,000 out of 1.5 million Cambodian migrant workers were undocumented.
Hence, the Cambodian government assigned a working group consisting of several ministries to work on the legalisation process, through centres set up in Bangkok, Patumtani and Rakyorng in Thailand,” Sam Heng said.
