Brunei: Supply of vegetables, fruits sufficient to meet demand
A trip by the Bulletin to vegetable markets/stalls showed that aside from bananas, there is sufficient supply of vegetables/fruits in the country, and that it is business as usual for operators – despite the COVID-19 outbreak.
Vegetable entrepreneur Haji Puasa bin Haji Barudin, 65, said the virus outbreak has not negatively impacted the sale of vegetables, rather it has promoted a great demand.
Having been in the business for quite some time, he said that the demand this month is “really high,” hardly allowing him enough time to harvest his plantations, particularly bananas. In some cases, bookings had to be made.
Stall operator Hajah Maimunah binti Haji Mahsuri who sells bananas primarily, said there has been extraordinary demand for the fruit.
Although the demand is high, prices remain the same – even though most of the bananas are supplied from neighbouring countries.
Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong at a recent press conference said that vegetable supplies in the country are sufficient, with entrepreneurs reassuring of their abilities to increase production.
Authorities are monitoring the latest development and any changes that could affect the import of agricultural and fishery commodities to the country will be tackled using the Whole-of- Nation approach to ensure food supplies are secured.
