Brunei: Special pass for frequent cross border travellers
A special Frequent Commuters Pass (FCP) arrangement has been introduced for frequent commuters crossing the border, said Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah.
“There are those who travel frequently across the border, such as workers who commute on a daily basis and students who exit Brunei to study,” he said, during a press conference held yesterday at the Ministry of Health (MoH) building.
“For these type of travellers, we are concerned about the impact on their finances. Hence, we have a special arrangement for them, whereby they have to apply for the FCP. This applies to Bruneians as well.
“We have already indicated this to Malaysia and are waiting for them to talk to us, to see what kind of arrangement we can arrive at,” Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew said.
Starting today, all citizens, residents and foreigners travelling through land border checkpoints must pay BND3 per person for a one-way trip and BND6 per person for a return trip, under the Exit and Entry Charges Order 2020.
Malaysian media quoting Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg reported on Tuesday that Sarawak has requested Putrajaya to seek inter-governmental arrangements with Brunei on the implementation of entry and exit charges at the land border checkpoints.
Abang Johari said he will leave it to the federal government to consider the proposals by Malaysia to Brunei on government-to-government arrangements, which can help alleviate the burden of affected Sarawakians, particularly those in Miri, Limbang and Lawas.
In July, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan wrote a letter to the Brunei Government, requesting for the postponement of the implementation of entry and exit charges at land border checkpoints.
Following the written request, Brunei Darussalam postponed the implementation of entry and exit charges at land border checkpoints to October 1.
