Brunei: CPI declines by 0.8 per cent
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August 2019 decreased by 0.8 per cent year-on-year compared to August 2018.
Prices of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages decreased by 1.2 per cent, while Non-Food prices also decreased by 0.8 per cent.
According to a press release from the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE), Ministry of Finance and Economy, the CPI decrease was mainly attributed by the decreases in the prices and costs of Clothing and Footwear (6.2 per cent); Transport (3.5 per cent); and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (1.2 per cent). However, this was moderated by the increases in the prices and costs of Restaurants and Hotels (4.6 per cent); Recreation and Culture (2.6 per cent); and Education (0.3 per cent).
The press release noted that prices of Clothing and Footwear decreased due to offer price of garments.
Meanwhile, the decrease in the prices of Transport, and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages were respectively attributed by prices of motor cars and air tickets, and prices of biscuits, fresh fish and eggs.
On a month-on-month basis, the CPI in August 2019 decreased by 0.3 per cent compared to July 2019. The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Index decreased by 0.2 per cent, while the Non-Food Index decreased by 0.3 per cent.
The CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period and compiled on a monthly basis. The list of goods and services in the CPI is based on the average expenditure per household from the Household Expenditure Survey (HES).
