Cambodia spent nearly $1 billion on import pigs and poultries each year

Cambodia has spent around $400 million to purchase live pigs from a foreign country every year.

A representative of the Cambodian Livestock Raisers Association said this at a conference on import restrictions on live pigs in Cambodia.

A CLRA representative said, “Each year, about $400 million is spent on buying live pigs from neighbouring countries. How about we use this budget to buy corn, bean and other agriculture products locally as this will help the local farmers a lot.”

“We can raise the pigs to support the local market without imports,” the CLRA representative said, adding that by adding the money used to buy cattle, chicken, vegetables and other poultries, the money goes to a foreign country and this worth nearly $1billion each year.

The representatives of the Cambodian Livestock Raisers Association said that if we use the $ 1 billion to raise pigs and poultry locally, we could generate more jobs for the people in the country and they do not need to migrate to work in a foreign country.

At the same time, the representative also appealed to all importers as well as livestock farmers to invest and raise the pigs and poultry locally to supply the local market.
