Cambodia included in route of Taiwan’s largest shipping company

Yang Ming Marine Transportation Co, the largest Taiwan-based global shipping logistics services company, will soon service the China-Vietnam-Cambodia (CVK) shipping route.

A company press release announced that the CVK service will commence in less than two weeks following a route composed of the following cities (in order of arrival): Ningbo, Shanghai, Xiamen, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Sihanoukville, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, and Ningbo.

“In light of the strong cargo volumes in the area of China, Vietnam, and Cambodia, Yang Ming is pleased to announce the launch of CVK service with effect from 21st October,” the press release said.

According to the Ministry of Transport, Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Cambodia’s sole deepwater seaport and its most important trade link to the outside world, handled 541,228 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2018, which represents a 17.7 percent increase from the previous year. This year, the port is expected to handle more than 700,000 TEUs.

According to the company, it is their first service that directly links China’s ports to Sihanoukville and Da Nang, which is among Vietnam’s most important seaports.

“In addition to its current Intra Asia network of 45 services, Yang Ming continues to strengthen its coverage in the area. With the new service, Yang will provide customers with a better and more comprehensive global service network,” it said.

Sin Chanthy, president of the Cambodia Freight Forwarders Association (CAMFFA), told Khmer Times he welcomes Yang Ming’s entry into Cambodia.

“This is a very good development as Cambodia still has much space for new shipping companies to come,” he said. He stressed that this could lower the cost of shipping goods between the three countries, which according to him, is currently very expensive.

According to Yang Ming, the launching of the CVK service will significantly shorten the transit time and offer a more efficient delivery service between China, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

Cambodia’s growing importance as a trade hub is leading more shipping companies, including more than a few major international shipping lines, to open an office or service the Cambodia shipping route.

Last year, Evergreen Shipping Services (Cambodia), another major Taiwanese shipping company, opened an office in Cambodia and started a weekly service with stops in China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia’s Sihanoukville. Before that, Wan Hai Ship Ltd, a container shipping company also in Taiwan, added Sihanoukville to its shipping route.

This year the Kingdom held the biggest shipping industry event in Southeast Asia for the first time. The 17 edition of the Asean Ports & Shipping was held in Phnom Penh last month.
