Cambodia: Freight forwarders urged to embrace e-commerce

The air freight sector should adopt paperless processes and embrace e-commerce to meet rising demand for air cargo services in the country, industry insiders said on Wednesday.

At an event organised by the Cambodia Freight Forwarders Association (CAMFFA) in Phnom Penh, key players in the industry discussed the challenges and opportunities that local companies face.

Sin Chanthy, president of CAMFFA, said embracing e-commerce is crucial to the survival of local freight forwarders.

“We are service providers. Both CAMFFA members and non-CAMFFA must provide e-freight solutions.

“Even though we do not have laws guiding the use of e-commerce in Cambodia, some companies are already using it,” said Mr Chanthy.

Chloé Lapeyre, general manager at Phnom Penh International Airport, said the adoption of paperless processes in air freight is part of the company’s master plan.

“We are ready to adopt more paperless solutions and we are also prepared to do our part in getting freight documents to be e-commerce ready.

“We are also willing to participate in workshops to discuss how to get e-freight documentation to match necessary requirements,” she said

Cambodia Airports has plans to expand warehouses in Phnom Penh International Airport to answer to an increase in demand for cargo services, Ms Lapeyre said. However, she did not provide specific details on these expansion plans.
