Laos: Agreement Reached On Compensation of Railway Project Affected Families

(KPL) Laos-China Railway Project and relevant authorities have reached agreement on the compensation of families affected by the multibillion-dollar project and asked the families to open account with Banque Pour Le Commerce Exterieur Lao to receive the compensations.

The agreement was reached at a meeting held on 22 Feb in Luang Prabang in the presence of Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport and Chairman of Laos-China Railway Project Managment Committee Lattanamany Khounnivong, provincial mediation committees, representatives of provincial departments of public works and transport and relevant authorities from Vientiane, Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang and Vientiane (province).

Agreement reached at the meeting will be reported to the committee in charge of the project compensation.

Dscussed at the meeting included compesation procedure, compensation prioritization, and planned inspection of victim registration reporting.

 “Following one day of discussion at the meeting, we have reached agreement on the payment of compensation. The payment will be transfered to bank account of Banque pour le Commerce Exterieur Lao with a copy of notice sent to provincial governors for acknowledgement. Vice governors, as a supervisor of the project, will approve the payment,” said Mr Lattanamany.  

Priority of the compensation will be farmers whose crops damaged and those with residential properties surrendered to the government.

As for paying the compensations, provincial and Vientiane mediation committee will ask approval from the provincial governors and affected families must open account with Banque Pour Le Commerce Exterieur Lao.
