Indonesia: Energy Ministry Revokes Mining Permits Regulation
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has revoked the regulation on controlling troubled mining permits. According to the government, it is irrelevant because the permits regulation has been completed.
It is on the Regulation of Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No. 43/2015 about the evaluation of mineral and coal mining business permit.
At the end of 2017, the Ministry of Energy reported the troubled permits as 2,509 permits, of total permits of mining as 9,074 permits.
Recently, the government only blocked 5,587 permits. The action would apply to 3,078 clean and clear expiry permits, 1,845 non-clean and clear expiry permits, and 664 currently active troubled permits.
The government also banned the troubled miners from selling their mining products abroad. The similar announcement was also given to the Ministry of Finance to not grant permission to the blocked companies.
Coordinator of the Mining Advocacy Network Merah Djohansyah considers that the mining permits regulation is not completed yet. Because the clean and clear status does not guarantee that the miners are free from trouble.
In addition, to permit structuring rules, ESDM also simplifies 51 regulations to 29 regulations.
