Myanmar: Initial drilling for Pyi Thit well-1
According to MPRL E&P, Pyi Thit Well 1 in offshore Block A-6 was spudded to appraise gas reserves and prospects.
The British Virgin Island-registered MPRL E&P signed a production sharing contract (PSC) with Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) in January 2017 for oil and gas exploration in Block A-6.
The company has been drilling in Pyi Thit’s exploratory wells since March 2012 and a gas discovery was declared after drilling Pyi Thit-1. Pyi Thit-1’s appraisal well is going to be spudded during the second week of June, MPRL E&P announced.
Similarly, a senior official from the Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MOEE) told The Myanmar Times two weeks ago that discoveries in A6 and AD-7 blocks are going to be appraised for commerciality.
“Commerciality depends on oil and gas reserves, [and] investment amounts … it can›t be finished within three or five years because some are difficult,” he said.
Prospects are found in some blocks but they haven›t been drilled yet. It can be approved only after drilling and thus it can›t be finished within one year. In reviewing commerciality, it has to be done after comparing production volumes and investment amounts based on recoverable reserves of oil and gas, a senior official said.
Block A-6 is situated in the Rakhine offshore area which is 9830 square-kilometres wide. Water depth ranges from 50 to 2500 metres. Water depth in Pyi Thit-1’s appraisal well location is 6578 feet (2005 metres) and the total vertical depth needed to be drilled is 15420 feet (4700 metres).
The transoceanic drill ship «Dhirubhai Deepwater KG2” will be used to appraise gas reserves and prospects in 5-million-year-old Pliocene sandstone layers.
Australia-based Woodside and France-based Total companies made investments in A-6 to cooperate with the MPRL E&P in 2013 and 2015 respectively in order to expand deepwater exploratory activities after finding good results in Pyi Thar-1. Currently, the MPRL E&P is the PSC operator of Block A-6.
Drilling started in the evening of June 8 evening
“The well has reached over 80 meters below water depth.
“After putting a thing like concrete pipe and if it is OK, drilling will be resumed. Roughly speaking, we expect to know all results by mid-July,” the firm’s government and public affairs director U Tint Swe told The Myanmar Times.
