World Bank forecast: Myanmar economy will stagnate in 2022
According to a World Bank forecast Myanmar GDP shrank by 20 per cent in 2021 after the 2021 military coup and the economy will remain sluggish and stagnate in 2022.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) also reported that in 2021 1.6 million jobs were lost in the economy, adding to the economic problems.
On 21 October the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) put Myanmar on its blacklist, which will further affect its ability to maintain and attract foreign investment, which has already been limited under the military regime.
Some said that the failure to control cash flow in a country with no known income source and using money that had not been levied in taxes elsewhere in the country to run businesses and make payments compelled FATF to put Myanmar on its blacklist.
The recent, drastic depreciation of the Myanmar currency, the kyat and the junta’s failure to stop it, combined with rapid changes in export policy have caused the border trade at the Myawaddy to Mae Sot border post to fall considerably.
The import-export situation has not been helped by the junta’s new policy that any imports have to be paid for with previously earned export earnings
