Vietnam: More than 13,000 Facebook accounts targeted by the Hanoi department of taxation

The Hanoitimes – Online retailers need to cooperate with the Hanoi Department of Taxation and file tax returns in order to minimize future legal liabilities and risks.
Vien Viet Hung, the deputy director of the Hanoi Department of Taxation, affirms the obligation of online retailers to collaborate with the department. Accordingly, since March 2017, the Hanoi Department of Taxation has worked out    tax management proposal regarding online commercial activities.
Research on  online commercial activities show  that sellers on Facebook, Youtube, Zalo,. can own one or multiple different accounts to advertise or sell their products. However, the transactions mainly involve cash. Besides, some people participate in online business as a part-time job. The executives of the Department of Taxation asserts that due to the unique features of online commercial activities, the Department of Taxation needs to devise suitable strategies to manage and collect tax with regard to this type of business. 
Looking through the database, Hanoi currently has a record of 13,442 Facebook account owners with their own retail shops and advertising activities. The Department of Taxation has collected information on identities, phone numbers and determined that among the retailers, there are only 1,950 individuals who already register and are granted a tax code to  pay tax.
The tax units has sent SMS messages instructing on how to get access to tax information on the portal of the Department to account owners identified as not being registered  in the tax system. This webpage consists of guidelines on the obligations to register, file tax returns, so that online retailers can report to the Department of taxation.
According to the Hanoi Department of Taxation , in order to efficiently control online businesses, people need to understand clearly their obligations. It is therefore the duty of tax officials to instruct and support online retailers to register their businesses and declare tax voluntarily. The department will monitor and give out penalties on any misconducts according to the law. 
Vien Viet Hung shares his view: “The Hanoi Department of Taxation expects the cooperation from online retailers to register their businesses, and minimizing any future legal liabilities and risks”. 
The Hanoi Department of Taxation has sent text messages to more than 13.000 retailers who  use the social media networks as a retail platform. So far,  one online businesspeople  has come to the Department of Taxation to discuss the regulations on tax management of online businesses on Facebook.
