Thailand a leader in crypto ownership
Thailand is a world leader in terms of the proportion of the country’s internet users who own cryptocurrencies, engage in online purchases and buy groceries online, according to the Digital 2022 Global Overview Report.
Published by Datareportal in partnership with social media management platform Hootsuite and global agency WeAreSocial, the report indicated 20.1% of Thailand’s internet users aged 16-64 own some form of cryptocurrency — the highest proportion worldwide.
Just behind Thailand was Nigeria, the Philippines and South Africa, which each have 19.4% of their internet users owning cryptocurrencies.
Based on the percentage of internet users aged 16-64 who purchase something online each week, Thailand is in pole position with 68.3%, followed by Malaysia (66.6%) and South Korea (64.9%). The global average is 58.4%.
Thailand is also the world leader when it comes to online grocery purchases with 45.8% of its internet users aged 16-64 buying groceries online each week. Just behind Thailand is South Korea (43.1%), followed by Mexico (39.4%). The global average stood at 28.3%.
According to the report, Thailand ranks second in the world in terms of fixed internet connection speeds with median download speeds of 171.37 megabits per second, behind Singapore with median download speeds of 184.65 Mbps.
However, the country ranks 29th in the world in terms of mobile internet speeds at 31.9 Mbps. The global average is 29.06 Mbps.
Thailand is also in second place globally for average amount of time spent online on mobile phones per day at 5 hours and 28 minutes, behind the Philippines at 5 hours and 47 minutes, found the report.
Thailand again comes in No.2 for percentage of internet users who play video games on any device at 94.7%, trailing only the Philippines at 96.4%.
Another finding from the study is Thailand ranked seventh for the daily time spent on the internet on any device at 9 hours and 6 minutes, compared with a global average of 6 hours and 58 minutes. South Africa took the top spot in this category at 10 hours, 46 minutes, followed by the Philippines (10 hours, 27 minutes) and Brazil (10 hours, 19 minutes). The global average is 6 hours, 58 minutes.
Thailand ranks third in terms of mobile payment service with 36.2% of internet users engaged in such activity every month, trailing only Hong Kong (41.6%) and Taiwan (39.3%). The global average is 25.8%.
Regarding online video as a source of learning, Thailand ranked 27th with 41.7% of internet users watching an educational video each week, below the global average of 46.8%.
