Thai-Cambodia trade forum delayed

The commerce ministers of Cambodia and Thailand yesterday agreed to delay a planned 2017 forum on trade.

The meeting between Commerce Minister Pan Sorasak and his Thai counterpart Apiradi Tantraporn was held to discuss preparations for the Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam-Thailand (CLMVT Forum) 2017.

But the two ministers agreed to push the forum to early 2018, while also discussing trade concerns.

“At the meeting, the two sides agreed to delay the holding of the forum to early 2018, as the MoC of Cambodia has a busy schedule this year and is unable to host the CLMVT Forum,” a joint statement issued after the meeting said. “With the establishment of this forum, the Thai side promised to provide technical support and financial support for the smooth running of the forum.

“Meanwhile, the Cambodian side raised some issues and concerns regarding bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand,” the statement added. “First, the Cambodian side asked the Thai side to facilitate the export of corn products from Cambodia to Thailand in accordance with the agreement under the Asean framework.

“Second, the Cambodian side requested that the Thai side facilitate goods transportation through Thailand to a third country. Regarding this, the Cambodian side raised its concerns over Thailand’s new tariff law, which disrupts cross-border transportation to a third country.”
