Myanmar: Trade body seeks streamlining on duties for double-cab trucks

The Myanmar Automobile Manufacturers and Distributors Association (MAMDA) has requested Vice President U Myint Swe to classify double cab trucks as commercial vehicles and levy a single tax on the category of vehicles.

The MAMDA made the request during a regular meeting between Private Sector Development Committee led by the vice president and private enterprises held on October 19 at the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI).

Currently, the Department of Customs has reduced custom duties on double cab trucks by categorising them as commercial vehicles under the Harmonised Commodity Description and Coding System (HS code), the international standardised system of names and numbers for the classification of commodities. Meanwhile the Road Transport Administration Department classifies them as private-use vehicles and levies another tax, said MAMDA Vice Chair U Zaw Htike Aye.

There are also no different tax rates for completely built up and semi-knocked down (SKD) versions of the vehicles, he added.

MAMDA is proposing to reduce customs and commercial taxes for assemblers of SKD and completely knocked down (CKD) trucks and buses used for public transportation, and the setting up of an automobile manufacturing industrial zone to boost SKD and CKD production.

The association’s officials also propose to prioritise purchasing SKD and CKD cars assembled in the country for government tenders as well.

Investments are flowing into the domestic automobile manufacturing sector, which largely focuses on passenger vehicles. Only a few companies are assembling trucks and buses, he said. – Translated
