Myanmar: French chamber opens branch in Mandalay

The French chamber will launch its Mandalay business centre in early November to serve European, French and Myanmar businesses eager to expand into the country’s second largest city.

CCI France Myanmar Business Centre will be located in Unit 5, Block 2 of the Mingalar Mandalay Compound. Situated beside the old Chanmyathazi airport and across the New Mandalay Stadium, the compound is the first multi-purpose development in the city, including a hospitality complex, residential apartments, offices and commercial areas.

The move comes on the back of rising interest in Mandalay, particularly in the agriculture, tourism and construction sectors.

On October 21, David Levrat, EuroCham chair and board director of CCI France, told The Myanmar Times that Mandalay’s position as the northern economic powerhouse has attracted the interest of EuroCham, French and German chambers, which have already established or are considering setting up a branch in the city .

“Mandalay is the centre for economic activities in upper Myanmar,” Mr Levrat remarked.

May Thwe Khin, a spokesperson for the French chamber, said that office will initially occupy one floor but expand to two floors next year.

“We hope to connect European and French investors to Mandalay Region by providing a base for them to set up their branch here,” she said, adding that the chamber has another business centre in Yangon.

May Thwe Khin added that this will be the first European chamber to establish a presence in the city.

Despite the fact that the launch will take place in November, recruitment company MyWorld Careers has already joined the centre earlier this month.

Haymar Sususan, MyWorld branch manager, said that her hometown is Mandalay and she had wanted to return as opportunities in the city rose in tandem with investor interest.

“I am from Mandalay but I worked in Yangon, hence I wanted to come back to my hometown and set up a business here in this city.

“Our company did a survey about the recruitment industry here and we found out that they are not very professional, including aspects such as procedures, communications and data. It’ll be a good idea to set up an office here to educate candidates and clients on systematic way of recruitment,” she explained.
