Malaysia’s IPI up 3.5 per cent in January

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) – Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) grew moderately by 3.5 per cent in January 2017, compared to the same month of last year.

In a statement yesterday, the Statistics Department said the expansion was supported by positive growth in all indices, namely manufacturing (4.6 per cent), mining (1.1 per cent) and electricity (1.1 per cent).

The manufacturing sector output grew by 4.6 per cent for the month under review after an expansion of 4.3 per cent in December 2016.

The major sub-sectors which recorded an expansion in December 2016 were electrical and electronics products (6.9 per cent) petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (2.3 per cent), and food, beverages and tobacco (6.8 per cent).

The department said the mining sector output grew at a slower pace of 1.1 per cent in January 2017, after an increase of 5.8 per cent in December 2016.

“The sector was at a slower pace due to an increase in the natural gas index (5.3 per cent) and a decline in crude oil index (2.3 per cent),” it added.

The electricity sector output increased slightly by 1.1 per cent in January 2017, after significant growth of 6.1 per cent in December 2016.
