Indonesia’s December Trade Surplus Narrowed

Indonesia’s trade surplus narrowed in December as exports declined from the previous month.

The country recorded a trade surplus of $3.89 billion, narrowing from $5.16 billion in November.

Analysts polled by The Wall Street Journal expected a $4.01 billion surplus.

For the full year, Southeast Asia’s largest economy reported a trade surplus of $54.46 billion.

Indonesia recorded trade surpluses with the U.S., India and the Philippines, the country’s chief statistician, Margo Yuwono, said Monday.

Compared with a year earlier, the country’s exports were 6.6% higher.

In December, Indonesia’s imports rose 5.2% from the previous month to $19.94 billion, mostly due to higher inbound shipments of mechanical and electric parts.
