Indonesia to clock high economic growth sustainably: Bappenas

Indonesia’s vision in 2045 is that we want to become a high-income country after 100 years of our independence, but we want to achieve high growth in a sustainable way.

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia boosted its economy to grow, on average, six percent annually to become developed while keeping the rate of carbon emissions low, Economic Affairs’ Deputy at the Development Planning Ministry (PPN/Bappenas), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, stated.

“Indonesia’s vision in 2045 is that we want to become a high-income country after 100 years of our independence, but we want to achieve high growth in a sustainable way,” Widyasanti noted at the International Economic Modeling Forum here on Thursday.

She said, the COVID-19 pandemic has taught Indonesia valuable lessons to prioritize sustainable and just development.

The energy and manufacturing sectors were among the economic sectors in Indonesia that had been encouraged to reduce carbon emissions without disrupting performance, as stated in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document, she remarked.

Indonesia had earlier increased its carbon emission reduction target in 2030, from 29 percent to 31.89 percent through its own efforts and, from 41 percent to 43 percent of reduction with international assistance.

According to Widyasanti, to become a developed nation, Indonesia needs to continue to encourage growth of the manufacturing sector while keeping the rate of carbon emissions low by developing new and renewable energy (EBT) consumed by the sector.

“Hence, when we boost development of the manufacturing sector, at the same time, we can also contribute to our mission to reach zero carbon emissions,” she stated.

Indonesia would also need to start increasing the amount of investment in the sustainable energy sector to produce renewable energy, as it is projected to grow two percent above the economic growth.

“The energy sector in Indonesia plays a significant role in achieving sustainable economic growth in Indonesia,” she said.
