Indonesia: Retail Association Exlpains Closing of Ramayana Supermarkets
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Retailers Associations (Aprindo) deputy chairman Tutum Rahanata has confirmed the reports on the shutting down of Ramayana supermarkets.
Tutum was told that Ramayana closed its supermarkets for layout and formatting changes. “Whether the closing was due to loss or not it cannot be confirmed yet,” he said Thursday, August 31.
Tutum said that he has yet to see the government’s effort to help retail business in Indonesia despite the fact that the business has been sluggish this year. “The government should be more concerned.”
Ramayana plans to close eight outlets across the country. That include Ramayana supermarket in Pontianak shopping mall. “Pontianak Ramayana supermarket will only operate until August,” Ramayana area supervisor Marta Hutabarar was quoted as saying by Antara on Monday.
Ramayana management decided to close the supermarkets due to losses. She was not sure whether the place would be used to open other business by the company.
