Indonesia: Number of Foreign Tourists Grows 26.66 Percent, Mostly from China

TEMPO.COJakarta – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) chairman Suhariyanto said that foreign tourist arrivals in May 2017 hit 1.16 million. The figure was an increase compared to April 2017 or 26.66 percent compared to May 2016.

“It’s an encouraging trend because the number of foreign tourists rises consistently month-over-month,” Suhariyanto told a press conference in BPS building yesterday.

All in all, from January to May, foreign tourist arrivals reached 5.36 million. Data from the BPS show that the figure was a 20.85 percent increase compared to January-May 2016, during which foreign tourist arrivals hit 4.43 million.

Suhariyanto said that the highest increase was seen in Sam Ratulangi Airport, Manado. Compared to May 2016, the number of tourists arriving at the airport increased by 449.02 percent. “It’s attributable to the opening of direct flights from Manado to Chinese cities,” he said.

According to BPS, the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia through 19 major arrival points in May 2017 hit 963,310 or an 11.31 percent increase compared to May 2016.
