Indonesia: Jokowi to sign agrarian reform regulation this week

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said on Thursday he had instructed Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution to immediately complete the draft of a presidential regulation (Perpres) on agrarian reform as he planned to sign it this week.

“The Perpres [draft] hasn’t been on my table. But [I was informed] that it has already been completed,” Jokowi said at the State Palace in Jakarta as reported by kontan.co.id, recently.

Jokowi said the regulation was very important to address various agrarian issues including distribution of land certificates and plots of forest land.

The President expressed hopes that the social forest program could be implemented to guarantee a fair structure of land ownership in the country.

Previously, the government revealed that there were 126 million plots of land that needed to be certified, but up to 2015, only 80 million plots of land had been certified.

Jokowi said he was committed to accelerating the land certification program, as if it is held at a business-as-usual pace, namely by issuing only between 500,000 and 600,000 certificates every year, it would take 160 years to complete the land certification program.

He said his government had issued 5 million land certificates last year and planned to issue 7 million certificates this year as well as 9 million certificates in 2019.

Meanwhile, for the distribution of social forest, Jokowi said currently 1.9 million hectares of social forest land had been distributed. He also said the government planned to distribute another 3 million ha of forest land plots next year. (bbn)
